“The Dark Knight… he’s the hero Glasgow deserves, but not the one it needs right now.”
Today I hopped aboard a train and made an impromptu day-trip to Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland. My conclusion: Glasgow is eerily similar to my idea of Gotham City. In the span of a few hours I witnessed one shoplifting arrest (Primark, of course), one police chase (on-foot), and two official warnings for anti-social behaviour. Of course, both the reputation of Glasgow as ‘stab capital’ of Europe and its distinct ‘rough-around-the-edges’ look is equally matched by its new assertion that it is “Scotland With Style.” The shopping was fantastic and the “Style Mile” (a play on the “Royal Mile” in Edinburgh?) was no less than torture for me to walk, simply for the fact that I have no money to spend on the fancy designer threads. I checked out the Glasgow Cathedral (oldest building in the city and the only one that survived the Reformation) and the Necropolis, which offered great views of downtown. I also stopped in to the People’s Palace and Winter Gardens and had some delicious hot chocolate and a proper bagel at Tinderbox (YUM!!!). Basically, I spent the day exploring the city, which reminded me a lot of Manhattan (NYC) and also what I imagine that Berlin might look like.
All in all, I really do love Glasgow (although I got a little homesick for Edinburgh after a while) and will definitely be going back for another visit!
